Take the guesswork out of dry brushing with the RAILstuff Drybrush Texture Palette, our own design, 3D printed in-house at RAILstuff HQ.
Dry brushing works best when almost all of the paint has been removed from the brush before it touches your model. A texture palette gives you a much better way of doing this than simply wiping the brush on kitchen roll. Instead, you work the brush across textured surfaces, allowing you to remove excess paint while seeing exactly how the colour is behaving before committing it to your model.
Our palette features a selection of different raised and recessed textures, including brickwork, stone, rough ground, track and other surface details. This lets you test how your drybrush will actually pick out raised detail, rather than judging it on a completely flat surface.
It's particularly useful when weathering model railway buildings, track, ballast, stone walls, brickwork, locomotives and rolling stock. You can gradually work paint from the brush until you're happy with the amount being transferred, then move straight onto the model with much greater confidence.
The palette also includes smooth areas for loading, mixing and working paint, giving you a useful dedicated surface alongside the various test textures.
Why use a texture palette?

- Lets you test the drybrush effect before touching your model
- Different textures help show how paint will catch raised details
- Makes it easier to judge when the brush is ready
- Helps achieve more consistent dry brushing
- Useful for testing colours and building up highlights gradually
